We haven’t seen a Golf Mk4 in the workshop for ages, so it was a real pleasure to welcome this V6 model back in! It came in for a Golf Mk4 cruise retrofit, a neat upgrade that adds long-distance driving comfort and control.
What made it even better? The customer hadn’t been here for over 10 years — always great to catch up and work on something a bit special. We love these older VAG cars, and this Golf Mk4 cruise retrofit was a satisfying one to complete.
Still Driving a Mk4? You’re Not Alone
There’s something timeless about the Mk4 platform—solid build, clean lines, and in the case of this V6, a bit of grunt under the bonnet. But like many cars of its era, cruise control wasn’t always fitted from factory. This retrofit brings modern comfort to a classic daily driver.
What We Did on This Golf Mk4 Cruise Retrofit
The job itself was straightforward but still required attention to detail. We removed the lower dash trim and steering column cowl, fitted the correct OEM stalk with integrated cruise buttons, and ran the wiring loom to the ECU. On the V6 engine, this involves accessing the engine bay and connecting directly to the throttle module—no fly-by-wire here!
Once installed, we used VCDS to code the cruise control function into the ECU. A final test drive confirmed everything worked perfectly—set, resume, cancel, and coast all functioned as they should. No warning lights, no glitches, just smooth operation.
Why This Retrofit Makes a Difference
On long motorway journeys, cruise control reduces fatigue and helps maintain consistent speed—especially useful in average speed camera zones. For a V6 with a bit of poke, it also helps keep your right foot in check! This retrofit adds real-world usability to a car that still has plenty of life left in it.
Waiting While We Work?
This retrofit takes around 1–2 hours, so if you’re planning to wait, we’ve got a dedicated customer area with:

- ✔ Free tea and coffee
- ✔ Wi-Fi for browsing or work
- ✔ Smart TV and reading material
- ✔ Workshop viewing window (see your Mk4 getting the treatment in real time!)
Prefer to stretch your legs? Higham on the Hill has some quiet walking routes, or you can grab a bite at a nearby café while we finish the job.
Why OEM-Style Retrofits Matter
We specialise in vag retrofits, and that means doing things properly. Whether it’s a Mk4 Golf or a modern MQB platform, we use OEM parts where possible, follow manufacturer wiring routes, and code features using the correct diagnostic tools. The result? A retrofit that looks and feels like it came from the factory.
We also ran a full diagnostic scan before and after the install to ensure no fault codes were present. That’s standard practice here—because even on older cars, proper coding and testing are essential.
