This DAX Cobra audio retrofit gave us one of the most rewarding challenges we’ve tackled in recent memory. When we say there was no space—literally none—we mean it. No room for a stereo, no room for speakers, nowhere to hide an amp. But we love a good puzzle. 🎯🔧

Ever tried to retrofit a full audio system into a car that was never designed to have one? That’s exactly what we were up against with this 1968 DAX Cobra Replica. No dash space for a head unit, no speaker mounts, and no factory wiring to work with. So, we got creative. 🧠🔊

What We Did on This DAX Cobra Audio Retrofit

🔧 Installed a JL Bluetooth audio system—no head unit required
🔧 Fitted a compact Alpine amplifier for clean, punchy sound
🔧 Mounted ultra-slim JL speakers into custom 3D-printed pods
🔧 Built brand-new door cards from scratch—trial fit after trial fit
🔧 Added bespoke door pockets for a touch of practicality
🔧 Wrapped everything in Alcantara-style suede for that modern classic vibe

Why This Audio Retrofit Was So Unique

This wasn’t just a speaker swap—it was a full design and fabrication job. No templates, no instructions, just measuring, mocking up, and refining until everything fit perfectly. The DAX Cobra audio retrofit required us to 3D-print our own speaker pods to make use of every available millimetre inside the doors. Once we had the layout sorted, we thought—why not add some storage too?

Custom Fabrication Meets Period-Correct Style

We didn’t want the interior to look out of place. So, we finished the custom door cards and speaker pods in a suede-style Alcantara material that blends perfectly with the Cobra’s classic aesthetic. It looks right at home, but it feels modern and premium. And yes—it sounds phenomenal. 🎶

Classic and kit cars like the DAX Cobra don’t come with modern luxuries. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have them—if you know how to integrate them properly. This job took deep planning, custom fabrication, and a lot of patience. But the result? A clean, hidden audio system that delivers big sound without spoiling the look.
